Boucle de 198 kilomètres, le GR®30 fait le tour de nombreux lacs d’Auvergne d’origine glaciaire (lac de Guéry) ou volcanique (lac Pavin, lac de La Cassière, ...), lacs de barrage (lac d'Aydat et lac de La Cassière) et traverse trois régions volcaniques d’Auvergne : les Monts-Dore, la chaîne des Puys et le Cézallier.
